The ISPCA launched an investigation after a van left at a mechanics yard in Stradbally was found to have a caged monkey in the back.
The vehicle, belonging to a ‘travelling show’, was at the yard for repairs. It was there for a week before anyone looked inside.
The Barbary Macaque monkey was in a tiny, filthy cage, dehydrated and severely traumatised. She was taken to the Monkey Sanctuary in County Wicklow and made a good recovery.
A prosecution against the person responsible for the condition of the monkey is still pending.
