Activist threatened at circus

Thursday, April 20th, 2006

Gardai in Galway were investigating an incident where an animal rights campaigner was threatened while inspecting conditions at a circus in the area.

The campaigner from the Captive Animals’ Protection Society was verbally abused and threatened with physical assault while inspecting Circus Vegas.

She told the Star Sunday of her particular concern for the circus’ rhino and hippo: ‘The hippo has a small tank of water, scarcely the size of its body, in which it lies for extended periods. The tank is so small there isn’t even sufficient water to cover the animal. The rhino’s skin is in very poor condition and there are a number of visible sores on its face.’
