About us

The Captive Animals' Protection Society (CAPS)

Founded in 1957, CAPS is a UK-based animal protection charity campaigning against the use of animals in entertainment. Since 1957 we have led the campaign to end the use of animals in circuses.

A blend of undercover investigations, political and educational work has seen the number of animal circuses in the UK decline rapidly, and an increase in the number of councils banning animal circuses from their land.

CAPS works with other organisations worldwide on issues relating to animal captivity in circuses, zoos and the exotic pet trade.

The Alliance for Animal Rights (AFAR)

AFAR was founded in 1989 in Dublin.

Making the public aware of animal issues and doing what we can to stop cruelty, we cover a wide range of issues. As well as campaigning against animal circuses, with protests outside them, we campaign against the fur trade, factory farming, vivisection, etc.

The weekly AFAR information stand held in College Green each Saturday outside the Bank of Ireland has reached thousands of people and is indeed Ireland’s longest running project of its kind.
